...Morning Area Forecast Discussion...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 357 AM EDT Wed Apr 9 2025

Key Messages:

    - Mostly clear skies Today.

    - Showers and Thunderstorms moving back into the state Thursday.

Current satellite loop shows clear skies over the state as a high
pressure ridge builds south and east out of the great lake states.
This ridge becomes centered over the Mid Atlantic states around
sunrise keeping GA mostly clear today. This ridge will be short
lived as it gets squeezed off the eastern seaboard Tonight by the
next closed low frontal system developing over the upper Mid-Western
states Today. This next low center is currently deepening over
NE/IA/MO area and will move east into IL this evening. It continues
to push east into the OH/PA through Thu evening. Its associated cold
front pushes south across KY and TN Tonight and begins to bring
precipitation back to North GA right around daybreak Thu. The front
lingers over North GA through Thu afternoon then pushes south
through the state exiting the area by 12z Fri. As this front moves
through the models are showing a decent amount of available moisture
with the highest rainfall totals expected across north GA. We should
see right around an inch of precip across most of north GA by Thu
night. The rest of the area should see 3/4" or less through Fri
morning. With daytime heating we could also see some MUCAPE in the
500 to 1250 J/kg range Thu afternoon and bulk shear (0-500 mb)
values near 50 kt. This will give GA some potential for a couple
strong or severe thunderstorms. SPC has upgraded a good portion of
NW GA into a slight risk area (level 2 of 5). Looks like isolated
cells with hail and or damaging winds will be the main concern.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 357 AM EDT Wed Apr 9 2025

Upper level troughing will overspread the majority of the eastern
CONUS as the long term period begins on Thursday night. As trough
digs into the Deep South, it will advance a surface low
southeastward from the Lower Midwest towards the Mid-Atlantic coast.
As this occurs, a cold front trailing from the low will enter far
north Georgia and push southward through the forecast area during
the overnight hours into Friday morning. Showers and scattered
thunderstorms will be ongoing ahead of the frontal boundary. MUCAPE
between 500-1000 J/kg is expected to still be present in north
Georgia at 00Z Thursday night. With deep layer bulk shear of 40-50
kts ahead of the front and mid-level lapse rates over 7 C/km, the
potential is there for a few storms to become strong to severe on
Thursday night. Severe storms that develop will be capable of
producing damaging wind gusts and hail. The threat for severe
weather is expected to steadily diminish through the overnight hours
as instability diminishes and the front moves into central Georgia.

On Friday, breezy northwest winds behind the passage of the cold
front will usher in cooler temperatures. Highs on Friday
afternoon will be in the 60s in north Georgia (except for mid to
upper 50s in the higher elevations) and low 70s in central
Georgia. With the forecast area remaining in close proximity to
the upper level trough, mostly cloudy skies and isolated light
showers may linger throughout the day on Friday. With cooler air
and dropping dewpoints, instability is expected to be limited, and
thunderstorms/severe weather are thus not expected.

By early Saturday morning, the aforementioned trough will become cut
off from the jet well to the north. The cutoff low will then meander
eastward towards the Atlantic coast, positioning Georgia under
northwesterly flow between this upper low and a ridge over the
central CONUS. Surface high pressure associated with the ridge will
also settle in over the Southeast on Saturday and Sunday. The
combination of these factors will benign weather and mostly clear
skies in place across the area through the weekend. Low temperatures
on Saturday will range from the upper 30s to mid 40s. Highs on
Saturday will be slightly cooler than Friday and about 8-12 degrees
below daily averages, in the mid 50s to low 60s in north Georgia and
mid to upper 60s in central Georgia. Low temperatures on Sunday will
be in the mid 30s to low 40s across the majority of the area, and
could approach freezing in the northeastern mountains. Frost/Freeze
products may need to be considered for portions of north Georgia
early Sunday morning if temperatures trend lower. By Sunday
afternoon, the ridge will build in over the region as the surface
high shifts southeast of the forecast area, which will lead to
steadily warming temperatures into early next week.
